Fix Me: A Therapist’s Perspective on True Healing

It’s a phrase I’ve heard countless times: “Fix me, please.”
I understand the desperation behind the plea. I feel the fatigue. The ache. The confusion. We live in a world that teaches us from a young age that when something breaks, someone else must fix it. So naturally, when we feel fractured - physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually - we look outward for help. We seek a mechanic. A specialist. A therapist. A healer. Someone with the tools and knowledge to set us straight.
But here’s the truth: I am not here to fix you.
No therapist, healer, doctor or practitioner can fix you. Not in the way most people imagine. What we can do however, is help awaken your own innate capacity to heal yourself. A true healer does not pour healing into you. A true healer creates a safe, grounded and intentional space where you can access your own wisdom, your own light, your own inner healer. and insight.
That is where the real magic begins.
The Illusion of the "Fix"
Modern culture has conditioned us to believe that healing is something done to us, rather than something that happens through us. We’ve outsourced our power - to systems, to experts, to protocols. We’ve been taught to mistrust the subtle whispers of our bodies and instead seek loud, external directives. We wait for someone to diagnose, label, prescribe or advise before we allow ourselves to believe that something is wrong - or right.
This cultural conditioning has seeped into the wellness space too. There’s a kind of consumerism around healing now. People shop for therapists like they shop for quick-fix supplements: “Who will fix this anxiety? Who will remove this pain? Who will do the healing for me? What is the latest technique to get rid of xyz?”
But healing is not a service you purchase. It is a journey you participate in. It requires presence, courage, curiosity and above all, a willingness to turn inward.
When “Fix Me” Becomes a Block
The clients who have shown the most profound shifts during our sessions weren’t the ones with the most acute symptoms or the most detailed stories. They were the ones who, at some point, stopped asking to be fixed and started asking themselves, What is this pain trying to teach me?
Healing begins when we stop resisting what is - when we relax into the present moment with enough awareness to feel, to listen, to observe the sensations and symptoms without judgment and discover the language our bodies speak.
When a client can breathe deeply, soften their grip on needing a result and simply be with whatever arises… that’s when something shifts. Often quietly. Often subtly. But undeniably. There is an intelligence within the body - a timeless, intuitive guidance that begins to surface.
And from that place, healing becomes organic. Real. Transformative.
The Lazy Way Out?
I say this with love: “Fix me” is the lazy way into healing.
Not because people are inherently lazy but because most of us have been taught to avoid discomfort at all costs. We reach for distractions, diagnoses and interventions, not because we lack intelligence, but because we fear what we might find if we slow down and listen.
Real healing asks you to feel what you’ve been avoiding. To face what’s been buried. To stretch into parts of yourself that may have been numb or silent for years.
That’s not easy work. But it’s your work.
And no one - not even the most gifted healer - can do it for you.
The Body Knows
Your body is not broken. It is not your enemy. It’s not a faulty machine in need of constant repair. It is a living, breathing ecosystem of intelligence and emotion, storing not only your physical experiences but also your memories, emotions, traumas and truths.
We’ve become so accustomed to overriding our bodies - ignoring their signals, silencing their wisdom, numbing their pain. But when we actually begin to trust the body’s messages - when we pause, breathe and tune in - we start to remember that our bodies are speaking to us, not working against us.
In fact, the body is often the first to know when something is misaligned in our lives. Whether it’s a toxic relationship, an unexpressed truth or a life path that no longer fits - our physical form will whisper (or scream) until we pay attention.
Handing Over Our Power
We live in a world that reveres external authority. Doctors, politicians, spiritual leaders - even social media influencers are often granted more power over our decisions than our own inner compass. Can you feel the leakage of your own strength, knowing and energy here?
This dynamic can be especially disempowering in the realm of health and wellness. While medical guidance is undeniably important and often clarifying and life-saving, it should not eclipse our own intuition.
You know your body better than anyone. You live in it. You feel its fluctuations, its responses, its quiet inner nudges. You must be the first port of call on your healing journey. Not the last resort.
Learning to trust your body’s “yes” and your gut’s “no” is part of reclaiming your sovereignty. And time needs to be given to this connection and inner-standing.
Healing as a Partnership
The most profound healing happens in partnership.
When client and healer meet each other with mutual respect, open-hearted intention and shared responsibility, a sacred container is formed. In this space, healing can unfold - not because someone was “fixed,” but because someone remembered who they truly are.
I have witnessed countless clients discover that their deepest pain was also their greatest teacher. That their anxiety held unexpressed truths. That their physical discomfort was pointing them toward an un-lived life.
And I simply held the space. Offered reflection. Applied the tools I’ve gathered along the way. But it was their willingness to show up and go within that made the difference.
The Invitation
If you find yourself saying, “Fix me,” pause for a moment. Ask yourself:
What part of me am I hoping someone else will take responsibility for?
What might happen if I simply allowed myself to feel what I’m feeling?
Am I willing to meet myself - fully, lovingly and without agenda?
Healing is not about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s not about “getting rid of” the pain, but about learning to listen to it with acknowledgement, compassion and curiosity.
So the next time you step into a healing space - whether it’s a therapist’s room, a yoga mat or your own meditation cushion - don’t come to be fixed.
Come to remember.
Remember that healing is already alive within you. Waiting. Whispering. Calling you back home.
Final Thoughts
As a therapist, I hold immense respect for the courage it takes to seek help. And I’m honoured to walk alongside anyone who is brave enough to step into the healing path. But I will not take your power away from you by pretending I can fix you.
I can hold space. I can reflect your light back to you. I can remind you when you forget, that you are whole, even when you feel broken.
But the healing? That’s yours. Always has been. Always will be.
